Clones originate from sources such as Colorado State University, Oregon State University and Texas A&M. We also micro-propagate from proprietary stock for customers such as Frito Lay, Nature Mark and the Irish Plant Breeders Association, among others. All clones are tested for virus and bacteria at Colorado State University and propagated in a sterilized media. Plantlets are then grown in a sterile soil-less medium in the Greenhouse and inspected by Colorado State University twice each crop cycle. These inspection include visual screenings and ELISA virus testing of leaf tissue. The plantlets produce nuclear seed which is harvested, sized, bagged and stored until planted on any of the farm's 1,800 acres or shipped to other growers for recertification.
Our Green house is capable of producing 1,000,000 tubers per year, of which are for sale.
The greenhouse and laboratory facility are operated since 1991 by manager Nitschka ter Kuile. Nitschka has a BS degree in General Agriculture, concentrating in Greenhouse Management. She previously worked Internationally at CIMMYT (International Center for Wheat and Maize Improvement), in Mexico, from 1985 - 1991. Most of the greenhouse technicians have worked over 9 years in tissue culture, where experience is unvaluable.
Our farm and greenhouse facility are known internationally. Not only are common varieties produced, but may exclusive varieties are grown for international breeders and American private companies. The facility also provides nuclear seed for local, national and international seed growers. Summit Farms has earned a quality reputation because of our hard work, attention to detail, and flexibility. Our staff and facilities can provide you with the highest performing potato seed.
